Glencarney Organics is a new venture of mine, to encourage people to similarly grow their hobby into a sustainable business, while at the same time supplying certified organic produce to their local communities, without the inherent carbon footprint of imported organic food.

0.75 acres of my 1.5 acres of land accommodates an orchard, with apples, pears, damsons, plums, cherries, cob and filbert trees.

0.25 acres of land alongside this orchard contains a soft fruit area, with black/red/whitecurrants, rasp/black/goose/strawberries and rhubarb.

The 0.5 acre vegetable plot has all the normal stuff.

2 polytunnels are in the process of erection - one to provide salad and herbs 12 months of the year - the other to start vegetable crops off - all from certified organic seed.

Before I can sell anything as organic, a minimum of 12 months needs to go by after applying for conversion - watch this space. Up till then, selling my produce to local Farmers Markets and restaurants is the aim, as chemical free.

To increase biodiversity, and to add value to the smallholding, I will be planting a wildflower meadow in the orchard, and keep bees to aid pollenation (and provide honey and beeswax), and chickens to help with weed control (and provide free-range, organic eggs).

Next to the vegetable plot, I will be creating a pond, where I will keep ducks to provide extra weed and slug control (and eggs), and potentially carp (a very under-rated but tasty fish) for sale, and to keep the water clean!

In amongst all these areas will be bird feeding stations and bat boxes - these will encourage our natural predators to provide pest control, as well as providing many hours of enjoyment whilst watching them.

I will endeavour to upgrade this website - when the time is appropriate - to a shopping site, so my customers can pre-order produce so I know what to take to the Farmers Markets I choose to visit.

One of the services I will be providing alongside this business is an Organic Gardening consultancy - so if you have a decent size garden, or have just started an allotment, then contact me to discuss what you would like to grow, and your  previous gardening experience. I can visit you and suggest what, and how, to grow, for your family's food and health needs.
